2024 FMT Youth Sponsorship Recipient Announced

We are very pleased to announce that Gabrielle Wright is the recipient of the First Mortgage Trust Youth Sponsorship Award for 2024.

Our annual Youth Sponsorship Program is an initiative we are very proud of.

It is open to those aged 16 to 25 who are excelling in sport, music, or art at a national and/or international level.

This year we had 57 applicants from all over the country, selecting one winner was incredibly challenging. However, upon reviewing Gabby’s application, we were thoroughly impressed with her hard work, her values, and her attitude:

“Living with a disability doesn’t mean giving up on your passions; it’s about discovering new ways to pursue them.”

Gabby is a T54 competitive wheelchair racer, who has spent over five years competing at the highest levels. Her journey after becoming paralysed in 2016, is a powerful story of resilience and success. She refused to let adversity slow her down, instead she’s used it to fuel her successes, both on and off the track.

Gabby has set multiple New Zealand records, competed internationally, and continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible, with her ultimate goal being to compete at the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles. Beyond athletics, she’s also channeling her passion for change into architecture, with a vision to revolutionize accessibility in modern design.

You can read more about Gabby’s story in our September 2024 newsletter.

Well done Gabby – we’re stoked to support you and look forward to

seeing you continue to break barriers and have a lasting impact!

About the Sponsorship

FMT started the sponsorship 19 years ago. The Sponsorship is open to young people between the ages of 16 and 25 who are excelling in their chosen field at a national and/or international level in the fields of sport, music or art. The successful sponsorship recipient will receive a grant of $3,500 to put towards helping them excel in their chosen field.

With the number of talented individuals in both sports and the arts that applied for our youth sponsorship this year, we are reviewing our sponsorship programme. We are exploring ways to increase our grant for next year, with the goal of supporting even more outstanding talent across New Zealand.

*NB Where sponsorship funds or donations are made by the Manager, these do not come out of investor funds. Funds or donations are paid for by the Manager although in the name of First Mortgage Trust.
